The Spring/Summer 13 season is encapsulated under the title ‘Creative Vision’ which marks an era of heightened creativity, evidenced by a cultural Renaissance in the Mediterranean, avant-garde tendencies and a renewed interest in traditional artisan skills. Inspired by similar creative manifestations of rebellion such as the art born out of the Great Depression in the 1930s and the Fluxus movement, we predict that unrest will once again prove to be a catalyst for innovation that will change the way we look at design on a global scale.
The three trends that make up “Creative Vision” start with New Renaissance – inspired by the rich culture of the Mediterranean combined with romance and vintage travel glamour. This decorative and decadent quality is expressed in the graphics and prints direction with scripted fonts and traditional Byzantine imagery of iconic religious figures, combined in a collage-style aesthetic. Soft traditional graphics and prints translate the romantic style that underpins the New Renaissance trend. Watercolour floral and ink bleed finishes inject the trend with femininity while painterly styles are delicately broken up with mixed media, creating a contemporary approach to traditional styles.
The second trend is Avant Garde inspired by the radical youth movements of the 1930s which fuels an aesthetic highly driven by statement graphics and prints in surreal photographic cut ‘n’ paste styles. Fundamental inspiration is found in Art Deco and Avant-garde movements as well as the Fluxus movement, whose alternative and experimental vision supports the emotive scrapbook aesthetic of the trend.
A rise in the master craftsman forms the backbone of the third trend Modern Artisan with a revival of traditional artisan skills, prompting a clean and precise aesthetic that dominates the male graphics and prints direction for the trend. Planned and mapped out details are key, creating gridded and defined layouts, incorporating the technical aspect of the trend. Graphics and prints for Modern Artisan are sophisticated and refined with heavy emphasis on typography along with an introduction of traditional embossing and etching techniques that are embedded in an artisan way. Hardware embellishment combines with precise embroidery to echo concepts of craftsmanship.
